Micro Joys: Finding Happiness in Everyday!
In the pursuit of happiness, which can sometimes seem elusive, we often set our sights on grand achievements and monumental moments. We strive for that elusive state of full joy, believing it to be the ultimate destination. At the end of the day when we are hit with that feeling of not having accomplished the dream, the goal, the ideal, it can lead to a feeling of defeat, failure and an attack of negative self-talk. The reality is that not every day ends with the grand spectacle of streamers and fireworks. And yet, everyday has beauty, little moments - the micro joys—that truly enrich our lives.
Life is a filled with moments, both big and small. While it's natural to crave the highs and celebrate the milestones, it's equally important to appreciate the beauty in the mundane, the simplicity in the everyday. After all, it's often these micro joys that sustain us through the ups and downs of life.
In a world that constantly demands our attention and pulls us in a million different directions, it's easy to overlook these small moments of happiness. We can become caught in the chase of the next big thing, the next promotion, the next milestone on our never-ending to-do list.
During one of my many training for life seminars, the instructor introduced a phrase often used by many; “I’ll be happy when….” The notion is that as much as we tend to achieve we are still constantly chasing the next big accomplishment. This is not to say that striving for better and more is a bad thing. The thought is, that while striving for better we can also take time to pause and appreciate what we already have; the beauty around and within us. This pausing gives us the gift of celebrating the plethora of things, big and small that have been accomplished in the day we are in.
Imagine waking up to the gentle caress of sunlight streaming through your window, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee permeating the air. It's not an extravagant experience by any means, but in that moment, there's a sense of peace and contentment that washes over you—a micro joy in its purest form (for me anyway😆).
It's about finding joy in the little things; the laughter of loved ones, the beauty of nature, the warmth of a cozy blanket on a chilly evening, preparing and eating a healthy meal today, the smile on a stranger’s face when you gave them a compliment or showed kindness in some small way. These are the moments that may seem insignificant at first glance, but upon closer inspection, reveal themselves to be the building blocks of a fulfilling life.
Embracing micro joys doesn't mean settling for less or resigning ourselves to mediocrity. Rather, it's about cultivating a mindset of gratitude and mindfulness—a willingness to find beauty and joy in even the most ordinary of moments. It's about recognizing that happiness isn't a destination to be reached, but a journey to be savored—one small delight at a time.
In our search for full joy, we often overlook the richness of the present moment. We become so fixated on the future that we forget to fully experience the here and now. But when we learn to embrace micro joys, we open ourselves up to a world of possibility—a world where happiness can be found in the simplest of pleasures.
So, the next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed or disheartened, take a moment to pause and look around. Notice the beauty in the everyday—the sunlight streaming through the trees, the sound of birds chirping in the distance, the smile of a stranger passing by, that time you met up with friends and your soul felt nurtured.
Take a moment and get curious about what you might be needing or missing. Is it talking to a trusted friend or family member to gain some support? It might be time to pause and recharge your draining energy budget with something or someone that feeds you in a supportive, caring way. These are the moments that we can hold on to; these micro joys that remind us of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us each and every day while also dealing with life. .
In essence, when full joy feels out of reach, it's important to stay open to the micro joys—to embrace the small moments of happiness that add richness and meaning to our lives. After all, it's often these tiny sparks of joy that illuminate our path and lead us towards a life filled with better.
“Today, I will focus on stressing less and feeling blessed.”
